No running water, but we’ve got YouTube

While in Jamaica, Brei and I took a trip to see Bob Marley’s birthplace in the small town of Nine Mile in Saint Ann parish. Bob is buried there, along with his brother, mother and several other family members. He is buried in a small chapel next to the house he was born in, within a small museum complex.

Nine Mile is in the rural hills of Jamaica, and our journey there took as along a small road that winded through the beautiful blue-green countryside. We passed through several small towns along the way.

When I say rural, I mean no-running water rural. Most of the people living out here planted there own crops for food, our guide explained to us.  It was about an two hour trip from the northern coast, where we were staying.

So here we are, out in the middle of rural Jamaica, where people don’t have running water. Imagine my surprise when our guide at the Bob Marley complex tells me he is a YouTube star. I really shouldn’t have been, but I was shocked to hear someone out there mention You Tube, let alone claim fame on it. It makes perfect sense, of course, and is the epitome of how flat the world has become.

Sure enough, when I got back, I searched for “crazy jamaican tour guide” and he pops up first in the search results. The top video of him had over 3 million views. Trust me, you could never forget this laugh:

The increasing ease of publishing online content for the world to view is certainly changing everything. The world is getting a lot smaller.

And if you ever find yourself in Jamaica, make sure you take trip out to Nine Mile. You won’t be disappointed.
